METRO WHEELS IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF OUR TRANSIT CLIENT'S STRATEGY TO IMPROVE ACCESSIBLE SERVICE.

THE TRANSIT ACCESS CLIENTS PARTICIPATING IN THE METRO WHEELS PROGRAM HAVE BEEN AGGRESSIVELY PURSUING A THREE-PART STRATEGY TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY AND RELIABILITY OF ITS ACCESSIBLE SERVICE.

EQUIPMENT: TO DO A GOOD JOB, THE LIFTS ON BUSES MUST WORK. IF THEY DON'T, CUSTOMERS IN WHEELCHAIRS CAN'T RIDE. OUR CLIENTS HAVE HAS SET HIGH STANDARDS FOR WHEELCHAIR LIFT MAINTENANCE TO MAKE SURE THEY BREAK DOWN LESS OFTEN, AND THAT THEY ARE FIXED MORE QUICKLY WHEN THEY DO.

EMPLOYEES: TRANSIT EMPLOYEES HAVE CHALLENGING JOBS, AND TO DO THEM WELL THEY MUST HAVE THEIR HEADS AND HEARTS IN THE RIGHT PLACE. OUR CLIENTS HAVE INCREASED THE AMOUNT OF TRAINING ITS PERSONNEL RECEIVE ABOUT SERVING CUSTOMERS WITH DISABILITIES. THEY ARE ALSO TAKING A NEW APPROACH TO RECOGNIZING EMPLOYEES WHO DO A GOOD JOB, AND COACHING AND DISCIPLINING EMPLOYEES WHEN PROBLEMS OCCUR. 

QUALITY ASSURANCE: WHAT GETS MEASURED IS WHAT GETS DONE. THE METRO WHEELS PROGRAM MEASURES THE QUALITY AND RELIABILITY OF ACCESSIBLE SERVICE. IT HELPS TRANSIT UNDERSTAND HOW THEY ARE DOING, AND WHAT THEY MUST DO TO IMPROVE.

HOW IT WORKS

  • A DEDICATED GROUP OF QUALIFIED RIDERS SERVE AS VOLUNTEER SERVICE MONITORS.

  • METRO WHEELS MONITORS RIDE JUST AS THEY NORMALLY WOULD, AND COMPLETE AN ACCESSIBLE SERVICE REPORT CARD FOR EVERY TRIP THEY MAKE (OR TRY TO MAKE).

  • THEN THEY SEND THEIR REPORTS VIA THE WORLD WIDE WEB TO TRANSIT ACCESS, AN INDEPENDENT MONITORING SERVICE CONTRACTED BY THE TRANSIT AGENCY.

  • TRANSIT ACCESS COMPILES THE VOLUNTEERS' REPORT CARD DATA AND SENDS REPORTS TO TRANSIT MANAGEMENT.

  • TRANSIT MANAGEMENT USES THE INFORMATION THEY RECEIVE TO LEARN ABOUT TRENDS IN ACCESSIBLE SERVICE QUALITY AND RELIABILITY, AND TO PINPOINT AND FIX PROBLEMS.
